This was the same stone that Jacques Cartier (the French explorer who discovered Canada) brought back to France from Canada in the 16th century thinking that it was real gold! This is the reason why Pyrite is also known as “Fool’s Gold”. Pyrite might look similar to gold due to their resemblance in colour. However, Pyrite will break rather than bend as gold does when it’s heated. The name pyrite is derived from the Greek word pyritēs, which means “in fire” because it can create sparks when struck against metal or stone.
